SCHOOL TO CAREER (9)

One year, .5 credit per semester - .5 Digital Communications, .5 Occupations

The world of work is rapidly changing as existing jobs become more complex and new jobs demand increased levels of education. Students must acquire increased academic competencies, advanced technical skills, and greater problem solving abilities in order to become productive citizens in a highly competitive global economy. This course will help you make a smooth transition into the high school setting, develop the necessary skills to succeed now and in the future, and make informed decisions about their major and career pathway. This class may not be repeated for credit. Students may also earn college credit with a grade of “B” or above.

One semester, .5 credit – Satisfies Digital Communications Graduation Requirement

This course is designed to prepare freshmen students for the uses of technology throughout high school and beyond and to engage them in career exploration activities. Students will be trained in basic technology skills, effective Internet searches, and software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation software. Students will also participate in activities designed to further their portfolio development. Students must have a signed Internet agreement on file. This course fulfills the Digital Communications graduation requirement and may not be repeated for credit. Students may also earn college credit with a grade of “B” or above.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS LEVEL I (10, 11, 12)

One semester, .5 credit per semester – Occupational

This course provides an introduction and a foundation for industry certification in application software. Students are given an introduction to basic technology skills, computer hardware, the Internet, word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software. Students must have a signed Internet agreement on file. This class provides a strong foundation for other career and technical and academic classes. This course fulfills the information processing graduation requirement and may not be repeated for credit. Students may also earn college credit with a grade of “B” or above.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS I (10, 11, 12)

One semester, .5 credit – Occupational

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Digital Communications.

This course is designed to achieve expert skills and knowledge in computer applications. Students will gain professional computer knowledge in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher. This class teaches the competencies necessary to complete Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification exams. The MOS program is the only Microsoft approved certification program designed to measure and validate users’ skills with the Microsoft Office suite of desktop productivity applications. Upon completion, students will have the opportunity to take MOS certification exams for Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Students may earn college credit. This class may not be repeated for credit.

MARKETING/SCHOOL STORE (10, 11, 12)

One semester, .5 credit – Occupational

Students will manage and operate our school store, the Cat’s Cave. Members of this course gain valuable hands-on experience in a retail setting by making management decisions, managing inventory, merchandising and advertising. This course may be repeated for credit.
