TEN-DAY ABSENCE RULE

If a student misses more than ten (10) class sessions during a semester, he/she may be subject to loss of credit in that class. This may be determined by the teacher of the class impacted by attendance. The student may appeal the absences to the Attendance Review Committee. The Attendance Review Committee will review student attendance history, class grades, behavior, performance, and hear student/parent comments in a formal meeting at the school or via an appeal letter. A schedule change with loss of credit may be recommended or other interventions such as the student making up class absences in excess of ten (10) absences. The student/parent/guardian may appeal the committee findings-recommendations to the principal within three (3) days upon receipt of the Attendance Review Committee letter. They should write a letter requesting an appeal to the Aberdeen High School principal.

ATTENDANCE/CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

As stated above, class participation in Health is an integral factor in meeting the goals of this course. In order for students to acquire content knowledge, use critical thinking skills and behaviors, and improve reading, writing, and communication skills, they must be in class. Class time provides students time and opportunity to reach course goals. These opportunities are often impossible to recreate. With this in mind you should observe the following attendance and conduct responsibilities:

1.      Get to class on time: Five (5) points will be deducted from your daily participation grade for each unexcused tardy.

2.      If you miss a day of school for any reason it is your responsibility to check with me, after or before class starts, to inquire about assignments you may have missed. You will be given the same number of days you were absent to make up any assignments or tests.

3.      Use a three-ringed binder notebook to record your journals, organize your notes, homework, research materials, and daily graded or ungraded assignments. Take notes: Take notes during class discussions, videos, lectures, and even during group work. We will use overhead or Power point notes, discussions, text reading assignments, and group activity as sources of information for exam questions.

4.      Hand assignments in on time: Late assignments and tests will not be accepted unless they are due to an excused absence.

5.      Treat everyone with respect and tolerance: Our opinions, politics, talents, and capabilities differ. Keep in mind everyone comes from a different set of experiences and may have values that differ from yours. Respect for others is important.

6.      Cell Phones and other similar items are not to be on or activated during class. They will be confiscated and turned in to the AHS Administration Office where you may pick them up after school.

7.      Please clean up after yourself: Help keep this room tidy and do not write on the desks.

8.      Come to class prepared: Bring your book, 3 ringed binder, paper, pencil and pens, and assignments. Listen and follow directions.

9.      Academic honesty is to be practiced: No cheating! This means copying another person’s work on either a daily assignment or on an exam. If you are caught cheating you will receive no credit for that assignment or exam. Your final grade will be lowered by one full grade. If you repeat this error you lose credit for this class. If a GROUP or Cooperative Project is called for you will be informed that is the case. Otherwise it is expected that you will do your own work on all assignments.

FINAL NOTE:

The purpose of this class is to learn about personal and family health. Because people learn in different ways we will use several methods and activities to accomplish that goal. If you have a problem in this class come and talk to me about it. It is appropriate to stop by after class to set up an appointment to discuss an issue regarding discipline, grading, course content, or teaching style. Good relationships rely on clear communication. My intention is to provide you with the best possible learning experience.
