American Sign Language  I

2007 – 2008

 

I.                    Course Description

 

This class provides an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), the language of the Deaf.  The class will emphasize vocabulary development, numbers, fingerspelling, manual alphabet, and introduction of ASL syntax and grammar.  You will develop these skills through conversation phrases, dialogues and videotapes.  Students will receive instruction about Deaf culture and history throughout the course, and explore vocational opportunities related to deafness and sign language.

 

II.                 Aims and Objectives

 

·         The course will study basic sign vocabulary, syntax of American Sign Language, manual alphabet and numbers.

·         The course will include Deaf history and Deaf culture.

 

III.           Assessment and Grading

·         Written and oral quizzes

·         Written unit tests on vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, and comprehension

·         Evaluation of completed assignments

·         Attendance and participation in class

·         Demonstration of expressive skills and receptive comprehension

·         Classroom presentations

·         An Exit Exam on all covered aspects

Class Attendance

 

The student is responsible to attend all classes (unless excused school absences) and actively engage in the day's lesson.  The student's attendance in the class is crucial to the student demonstrating proficiency in the subject.  Excessive absence (more than 10 excused or unexcused) may cause the student to be ineligible to earn credit in the class.

 

 

 

Classroom Rules and Conduct

 

All District and High School rules as listed in the Student Handbook will be observed and enforced.

 

Classroom Expectations:

1.       Arrive on time and prepared to learn (proper materials and positive attitude).

2.       Be polite and cooperative.

3.       Be respectful to each other (harassment of any kind will not be tolerated).

4.       No electronic devices in class.

5.       Respect the rights of others to express opinions and to learn.

6.       Be respectful to the instructor (especially substitutes).

 

Water is the only beverage allowed in the classroom.  Food is not allowed in the classroom.  Please ask for permission to use computers in the classroom.  Treat school property with respect.
